Disruptors of Real Estate?

It seems every time I open my browser or email there is someone proclaiming to be the Uber of real estate or even better, offering a unique game changer!

Holy crap, I’m sick of that phrase. If I had a buck for every time I’ve come across a real estate game changer I’d shut the bloody doors of my office and live off that!


Most of these people have decided that technology will replace the role of the agent. I see this as fundamentally flawed.

Why you ask? After all it’s happened with travel, car sales and most obviously with the taxi industry.

The main difference here is simply the value of the transaction involved. If I take an Uber ride and it sucks then I’ve blown maybe $25. If I stuff up the sale of my own home then I stand to lose tens of thousands of tax-free dollars. Herein lies the main, and mostly overlooked, distinction, the value of the transaction.

People want to know that they are giving their property the very best chance to get top money and they want professional advice to do it.

That’s why they pay agents 10K +. That’s why the short-term future doesn’t allow for the removal of agents from the majority of real estate transactions.

Likewise the main property websites in Australia such as realestate.com.au and domain.com.au are unlikely to be challenged in the short term simply because they are too well known, trusted and provide exactly the service they proclaim to. They bring buyers to your agent. Anyone attempting to take on these media monoliths is unlikely to succeed without some seriously deep pockets. By deep, I mean Mark Zuckerberg deep!

What we can do is make the process of submitting offers simpler and more transparent. We can use technology to allow buyers to have a greater level of confidence in the process and in doing so make it easier for the average consumer to compete thus benefiting the Vendor.

Why hasn’t it been done yet? I know right, it seems like a no brainer, doesn’t it?
